Substantiv: Obestämd och bestämd form — Indefinite & Definite Nouns
Swedish nouns are either en-words (utrum/common gender) or ett-words (neutrum/neuter gender). This gender determines the indefinite article (en or ett) and the definite ending that is added to the noun itself (-en/-n for en-words, -et/-t for ett-words, -na/-a for plurals). Unlike English, Swedish does not use a separate word like 'the' — the definite article is a suffix glued to the end of the noun. This is one of the most important patterns in the whole language.
Read this passage about Sofia's apartment. Every noun is highlighted — notice the indefinite articles before new nouns and the definite suffixes when the noun is already known.
What to notice: The first time a noun appears, it gets the indefinite article en or ett in front of it. The second time — when we already know what it refers to — the article disappears and a definite suffix is added to the end of the noun instead. en soffa → soffan (the sofa), ett bord → bordet (the table), ett fönster → fönstret (the window). This 'suffix-as-article' system is uniquely Scandinavian and has no equivalent in English.
