Indirekt Tal — Reported Speech & Word Order

When you report what someone said, Swedish changes word order inside the subordinate clause: the verb drops back to its natural position after the subject. The reporting verb is usually säga att, berätta att, fråga om or fråga + question word. Tense also shifts: present → past, future → conditional.

Read this passage carefully. Every reported clause is marked. Notice how the word order changes from direct to indirect speech.

Anders ringde Sara på kvällen. Han sa att han var trött. Han berättade att han hade jobbat hela dagen. Han frågade om hon ville träffas imorgon. Hon svarade att hon kunde mötas vid tre.

Sara undrade var han bodde nu. Anders förklarade att han hade flyttat till Malmö. Han tillade att han trivdes bra där. Sara frågade när han hade flyttat. Han sa att han hade gjort det i våras.

What to notice: In direct speech, the verb often comes second (V2): "Jag är trött." In indirect speech after att/om/question words, the verb falls after the subject, and negation (inte) stays directly after the subject too: han sa att han INTE var trött. Tense shifts: är → var, ska → skulle, har jobbat → hade jobbat.
