Infinitiv med att och utan att — Infinitive Constructions

Swedish uses the infinitive in many fixed patterns. The two most essential are: att + infinitive (used after certain verbs, adjectives, and as a noun phrase) and utan att + infinitive (without doing). Alongside these, the expressions hemma hos (at someone's home) and hem till (to someone's home) cover a key everyday distinction in place language.

Read this passage. Every infinitive construction is highlighted. Notice what triggers each one.

Anna älskar att laga mat. Det är svårt att sluta när man väl börjat. Hon gick ut ur köket utan att stänga spisen. Det är ovanligt att glömma sådant.

Hennes vän Bo kom för att hälsa på. Anna var glad att se honom. De satte sig för att prata. Bo frågade om att stanna till middag. Anna svarade utan att tveka.

Bo bor hemma hos sina föräldrar just nu. Imorgon åker han hem till sina föräldrar i Göteborg för att hälsa på. Han trivs bra hemma hos dem. Det är alltid trevligt att komma hem dit.

What to notice: Att + infinitive is used: (1) after verbs like älska, försöka, börja, sluta, hoppas; (2) after adjectives with det är + adj + att; (3) as the subject of a sentence (att resa är roligt). Utan att + infinitive = without doing. Hemma hos = at the home of (position); hem till = to the home of (destination/direction).
