Sveriges Geografi — The Geography of Sweden

Sweden — Sverige — is the third-largest country in Western Europe by area, stretching approximately 1,574 kilometres from its southernmost tip in Smygehuk, Skåne, to its northernmost point deep in the Arctic landscape of Lappland. Despite its large area, Sweden is one of Europe's most sparsely populated countries, with most of its ten million inhabitants concentrated in the south and along the coasts.

Understanding Sweden's geography is not just about memorising place names — it unlocks an enormous amount of everyday Swedish vocabulary. Compass directions, landscape words, and region names appear constantly in news, weather reports, travel, and casual conversation. When a Swede says the weather is better i söder (in the south) or that they are driving norrut (northward), you need these words instantly.

What to notice: Swedish compass directions work as both adjectives and adverbs, and they combine with suffixes to express direction of movement: norr (north) → norrut (northward), söder (south) → söderut (southward). Landscape words are mostly en-words or ett-words you need in both indefinite and definite form: en sjö → sjön, ett fjäll → fjället, en skog → skogen.
