Infinitiv eller Presens?
Infinitiv eller presens? — Infinitive or Present Tense?
Swedish verbs have two forms that learners often mix up: the infinitive (the base form, used after modal verbs and att) and the present tense (the form you use when describing what someone does right now or habitually). Getting these right is key to sounding natural in Swedish.
The most common Swedish verbs form their present tense by adding -r to the infinitive: läsa → läser, skriva → skriver, cykla → cyklar. But after modal verbs and the word att, you always return to the infinitive.
Emma läser en bok om kvällen. Hon vill läsa hela serien. Det är roligt att läsa på svenska. Hennes bror skriver en dagbok varje dag. Han måste skriva minst en sida. Det är bra att skriva för hand.
De cyklar till skolan varje morgon. De vill cykla till jobbet också men vägen är för farlig. Det är viktigt att cykla med hjälm.
What to notice: When the verb is the main action of a clause (with a subject), it takes the present tense ending -r. When it follows a modal verb (kan, vill, ska, måste, får) or the word att, it stays in the infinitive. Spotting which pattern applies is the key skill in this lesson.
