Demonstrativa pronomen — Demonstrative Pronouns in Swedish
Swedish has two sets of demonstrative pronouns — words for this/that — which must agree with the gender (en/ett) and number (singular/plural) of the noun they refer to. Getting these right instantly lifts the clarity and naturalness of your Swedish.
The four forms for singular are: den här (this en-word), det här (this ett-word), den där (that en-word), and det där (that ett-word). In the plural, Swedish uses de här (these) and de där (those) for all genders.
Den här boken är verkligen bra — du måste läsa den! Det här huset är äldre än det ser ut. Den där mannen bor i min gata. Vet du vad det där bygget är?
De här skorna är för stora för mig. De där barnen leker alltid utanför mitt fönster. Jag gillar de här blommorna — vilken färg!
What to notice: The key choice is always: is the noun an en-word or an ett-word? Then choose den/det accordingly. Här vs där is simply this vs that — close vs far. In the plural, de is used for everything, regardless of gender.
