Subjunktioner och Bisatser — Subordinating Conjunctions and Subordinate Clauses

This lesson tackles one of the most important — and most challenging — areas of Swedish grammar: the bisats (subordinate clause) and its distinctive word order. If you have been speaking Swedish mainly in simple main clauses, this lesson is the gateway to fluency. Subordinate clauses allow you to express complex ideas: reasons, conditions, time relationships, purposes, and reported speech. They also introduce a crucial word-order shift that catches almost every learner by surprise.

A subjunktion (subordinating conjunction) introduces a bisats. The six most important ones are att (that), om (if/whether), när (when), för att (in order to / because), innan (before), and efter att (after). Each one connects a subordinate clause to a main clause, and each one triggers the same critical rule: in a bisats, sentence adverbs (inte, aldrig, alltid, ofta) move to BEFORE the finite verb — the opposite of their position in a main clause.

Read this passage and notice every subordinate clause. Pay close attention to the position of inte — it sits before the verb in every single subordinate clause.

Lena vet att hon inte kan komma imorgon. Det är synd, för att mötet är viktigt. Hon frågar om det finns ett protokoll hon kan läsa efteråt. När hon har tid ska hon ringa Maja. Innan hon ringer måste hon inte glömma att ta fram anteckningarna. Efter att hon har ringt ska hon skriva ett mejl till hela teamet.

Maja förstår att Lena inte kan komma. Hon säger att hon spelar in mötet för att Lena inte ska missa något viktigt. Tobias frågar om de alltid spelar in möten. Maja svarar att de gör det när någon inte kan närvara. Efter att de har infört rutinen har aldrig någon missat viktig information.

What to notice: In every subordinate clause above, the adverb comes before the finite verb: inte kan, inte ska missa, alltid spelar, inte kan närvara, aldrig missat. This is the opposite of main clauses where the adverb comes after the verb. This bisats word order is the single most important structural rule at this level of Swedish — and the most reliable test of whether a clause is main or subordinate.
