Hjälpverb — Modal Verbs in Swedish

Swedish modal verbs — kan, vill, ska, måste, and får — are helping verbs that always appear together with another verb in the infinitive. They never change form based on person (no -r ending!), and they answer the questions: Am I able to? Do I want to? Will I? Must I? Am I allowed to?

Read this passage and notice how every modal verb is followed directly by a verb in its infinitive (base) form.

Sara kan simma mycket bra. Hon vill träna varje dag men kan inte alltid hitta tid. Hennes bror Erik måste arbeta på lördagar och får inte ta ledigt utan att fråga chefen. Han ska söka ett nytt jobb nästa månad.

Barnen får inte äta godis före middagen. De vill gärna titta på film men måste först göra läxorna. Läraren säger: Ni ska läsa kapitel tre och kan använda ordlistan om ni behöver hjälp.

What to notice: Every modal verb is followed by an infinitive — the dictionary form of the verb, without the infinitive marker att directly between them. You say Jag vill äta, not Jag vill att äta. The modal carries all the grammatical weight; the infinitive simply adds the meaning.
