Kortsvar — Short Answers in Swedish
In natural spoken Swedish, you almost never repeat the full verb phrase when responding to a question. Instead, you use a kortsvar — a short answer built from a pronoun and a copy of the auxiliary or finite verb from the question. This is one of the most powerful fluency tools you can learn, because it is precisely what native speakers do in every conversation, every day. Without kortsvar, your Swedish sounds technically correct but unnaturally wordy. With them, you sound immediately more fluent and natural.
The system works as follows: a yes/no question uses an auxiliary verb (har, ska, kan, vill, är, gör, gjorde) or a main verb as its finite verb. The short answer echoes that same verb — either affirming it with ja or negating it with nej, and adding a pronoun to show who. The result is a clean, natural response: Kan du simma? — Ja, det kan jag. (Can you swim? — Yes, I can.) Notice how Swedish typically adds det before the verb — this det acts as a placeholder subject in the short answer, making the construction feel complete.
The most important short answer patterns use: det gör jag (I do / I do that), det har jag (I have), det ska jag (I will/shall), det kan jag (I can), det är jag (I am), and their negated counterparts: det gör jag inte, det har jag inte, and so on.
— Talar du svenska? — Ja, det gör jag! Lite grann i alla fall. — Har du bott i Sverige länge? — Nej, det har jag inte — bara i ett år. — Ska du stanna länge till? — Ja, det ska jag. Jag trivs bra här. — Kan du laga mat? — Ja, det kan jag! Speciellt pasta. — Gillar du vintern? — Nej, det gör jag inte — jag föredrar sommaren. — Har du provat surströmming? — Nej, det har jag inte, och det tänker jag inte göra heller! — Är du trött? — Ja, det är jag. Vi gick tio kilometer idag.
What to notice: The verb in the short answer always matches the verb in the question — not translated, not paraphrased, but echoed exactly. Har in the question → det har jag in the answer. Ska in the question → det ska jag. Gör in the question → det gör jag. The only variation is whether the answer is positive (ja, det gör jag) or negative (nej, det gör jag inte), and which pronoun you need (jag, du, han, hon, vi, de). The det placeholder is the signature of Swedish kortsvar — English 'Yes, I can' becomes Swedish 'Ja, det kan jag'.
